What is Mediscan?

Mediscan is a photographic agency specialising in medical, health, scientific and natural history images.

Mediscan licenses media for a wide range of uses, such as magazine and book publications, websites and TV productions.

Our archives consists of over 1 million images and in excess of 2,000 hours of broadcast quality film footage. As we represent additional collections this figure is always growing.

We are continually digitising images from our archives and adding them to the Mediscan website, so if you cannot find the image you require on our website, contact us and we will source the material. All images are available as high resolution files. We are a digital library; we do not supply transparencies.

If you have any specific requirements we have teams of dedicated medical illustrators, based in London's major teaching hospitals, who will often be able to arrange the image you require.

Can I download images from the Mediscan website?

All images are available for download at standard resolution and a number are available online at high resolution for immediate download, subject to payment authorisation. These images are indicated on the website by a icon. When searching for images you are able to filter the results so that you only see images matching your criteria that are available for immediate download at high resolution.

What image formats are available?

Standard resolution
A standard resolution file can be used on-screen for presentations, CD ROMs and web applications. They are approximately 500 x 320 pixels (up to 5.5" x 3.3" at 96ppi) supplied as a jpeg file with an average file size of 600kb. A watermarked image is available to preview online and the un-watermarked copy is available as a download, subject to payment authorisation.

High resolution
A high resolution file is used for repro/print quality images in newspapers, magazines, books, etc. As a minimum these are generally approximately 3600 x 2400 pixels (up to 12" x 8" at 300ppi) and can be supplied as a jpeg, an RGB tiff or CMYK tiff with a file size of about 24Mb. Most images are available a lot larger than this. Depending on the source of the image, we may be able to supply at a higher resolution.

Some images are available for immediate download at high resolution as a high quality zipped jpeg. These are indicated on the website by a icon. After downloading you will need Winzip (PC users) or Stuffit (Mac users) to unzip the file. We recommend that the image is converted to a lossless file type, such as a tiff, after downloading.

For images that are not yet available online at high resolution we will retouch the image and upload it for downloading.

If you are ordering a number of images, or images at very high resolution, we may choose to supply a CD ROM, sent within 48hrs to Europe and 7 days to the rest of the world.

Ultra-high resolution
If you require a larger file size (e.g. for double page spreads or posters) we can meet your needs. Please contact us with your request. Available as either an RGB tiff file or can be supplied as a CMYK tiff file. These files are presented on CD ROM, sent within 7 days.

What video formats are available?

Video footage can be provided as VHS, DV CAM, BetaCam SP, MPEG or QuickTime. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

What is a licence?

When you buy an image from Mediscan, you purchase the right to use that image in a particular way. This is called a licence. All Mediscan images must be licensed for use. The licence to use an image will appear on your invoice and will spell out exactly how the image can be used.

How is a licence fee calculated?

The fee for licensing an image depends on your resolution requirement for the image and how much exposure the image will get. To ascertain the fee you enter the details of how the image will be used and an online price calculator calculates the fee.  If you would rather communicate with our sales staff please email or telephone. +44 (0)20 8530 7589 or fax +44 (0) 20 8989 7795.

How is a licence fee calculated for standard resolution images?

The online price calculator requires you to enter details of how you intend to use your chosen image. For example, we will need to know what the image will be used for (website, Powerpoint presentation, CD ROM, etc.), for how long and, in some instances, the territory (Worldwide, UK only, etc.).

How is a licence fee calculated for high resolution images?

The online price calculator requires you to enter details of how you intend to use your chosen image.  It will ask you to enter:
  • How the image will be used (magazine, educational book, etc.)
  • The size the image will be used (¼ A4 page, full A4)
  • The print run
  • The number of inserts
  • The position of the picture (front cover, inside, back cover, etc.)
  • The duration the image will be used
  • The territory in which the image will be circulated (North America, UK only, worldwide, etc.)
Do prices vary according to the chosen image?

Whereas licence fees vary according to the way they are used, they do not vary from image to image. The price you have been quoted for a particular use will remain the same, whichever image you choose.

Once I pay a licence fee, how can I use the image?

Once the fee is fully paid, the licence covers only the agreed use. If you want to use the same image for a different use later on, then there will be an additional fee to pay. If you want to use an image for a variety of uses at the same time then an all-in fee can be negotiated.

Are your images available royalty free?

No, we do not provide our images royalty free at the present time.

Can I open an account?

Yes, we have the facility for customers to open accounts with us. You can call us on +44 (0)20 8530 7589 to discuss your requirements and, of course, account customers are offered discounts on our regular prices for repeat business.

Account customers, with agreed terms and fees, are able to download high resolution images on credit, with invoicing at the end of each month.

What if I can’t find the image I require?

If you require an image that you cannot find on the website please contact us and we will locate the image for you; there is no search fee.

We also offer a commissioned service and organise photographic shoots for our customers on a regular basis. Call +44 (0)20 8530 7589 to discuss your requirements.

Can I pay for images in a currency other than GB Pounds Sterling?

For images licensed online, at checkout we offer the facility to pay in US Dollars, Euros and GB Pounds Sterling. For images licensed offline we can invoice in US Dollars, Euros and GB Pounds Sterling.

Can I cancel once I have licensed an image?

If you cancel rights granted in the Licence within seven working days from the date of the invoice, you will be charged a £30 service fee. If the cancellation notice is received more than seven but less than thirty (30) working days after the invoice date, a cancellation fee equal to fifty (50%) percent of the amount of the Invoice will be charged. AFTER THIRTY DAYS OF THE INVOICE DATE NO CANCELLATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AND THE FULL AMOUNT OF THE INVOICE MUST BE PAID.

Cancelling the licence revokes any right to use an image.
